December Garden Walk

The holiday season is upon us, the fist week of December is almost up and we’ve yet to get our Christmas tree decorated.

Life has taken a new dimension for me, I want to savor every minute and not rush through things.

For now, let’s take a walk through the garden:

wyandotte chics

These are Wyandotte chickens and are one of the prettiest, showiest looking chicks in our flock. They are not of egg laying stage, probably soon after winter we should be seeing lovely brown eggs in the nest boxes.

Above we have the Cranberry Hibiscus in bloom (one of my favorite garden plants for tea), even the bees are still visiting. Garlic is coming up and hey! Look in the compost bin a voluntary Tomato plant is pulling through.

The raised bed has a mix of vegetables from Casper White eggplant, beets, leek, mixed greens such as Romaine, Boston Bib, Zinn and variegated loose leaf lettuce.

molly and egret Molly is still enjoying grass feeding in the pasture and she’s got some egrets keeping her company. Waiting on some wet weather to sow some rye seeds.

As we continue our garden walk out in the pasture we find more visitors; a lovely couple – two very proud Florida cranes joined by two of their little ones, probably picking through some cow droppings looking for treats.
Let’s head to the front now, where we spot the orange trees decorating the front yard with lovely orange colored fruits. Looking over our shoulder we see the little figs fighting to get noticed, and finally after 5 years there appears to be fig buds! What a treat this will be.

The Autumn Early camelias have been struggling to claim a place in the garden and after two years they have given us a wonderful winter treat… lovely blooms!

…and finally, the prize of the garden, our reminder of Florida Winter Wonderland – the Poinsettia.
