Carmina Burana- Orlando Ballet

As the temperatures drop we begin to feel a fringe of Holiday in the air.

We headed into Orlando to see the production of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana – all of this because well, proud parents we are – to hear our son Geordan sing in the choir.

There is a world of music out there that is intriguing, full of history and lore and Carmina Burana captures all of those. None of which I was aware of until Geordan shared with me the back story. I heard the intro song and the melody was familiar… it was one of my favorites “O Fortuna” version by Enigma –

In 1934 Orff came across the texts to over 1000 songs which were written in a mix of Latin, German and medieval French; these texts celebrated earthy humor, the joys of the tavern, nature, love and lust.

Orff chose 24 songs which he set to music in what he termed a “scenic cantata”. He divided them into three sections – Springtime, In the Tavern and The Court Of Love – preceded by and ending with an invocation to Fortune.

It was a delight for they senses. Orlando Ballet dancing to the “Carmina Burana” – Carl Orff’s evocative 1930’s score brought to life on stage by a chorus of voices (the Bach Festival Choir), alongside Robert Hill’s mesmerizing choreography, with instrumentalists providing the orchestral tones.

Even the “under construction” banners at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts exude Art and Entertainment.
