Prayer … and Novenas

Prayer… some people think that prayer is something that only religious people do. I believe that many of us pray and don’t even realize we are praying.

I think some of the most powerful prayers are the ones that come from our hearts, some – are real brief, like:

“God, Thank You.”
“God, please help me.”

I grew up with grandmothers who prayed as part of their daily routine, in the morning, over meals, people who entered their homes were received with blessings… and also blessings were given when they left, and finally as if in a dream… I remember the family gathering right before bed in the living room joining in for evening prayers – I still recall sitting on the wood floor with other relatives sitting on chairs – the sound of crickets in the night air as we all gathered by the dimly lit lantern (I grew up for the first few years of my life in the Caribbean island with my grandmas and back then electricity had not been wired into our village); we prayed out loud and our voices together had a gentle timber that seemed to bring perfect and soothing peace into our hearts. Almost seemed like both my grandmothers lived a life of prayer… and perhaps those prayers that have been sent onto the waves of life circling our planet may have saved me from harm countless times.

So, I am not a stranger to prayer and I too, can not imagine this special communication I have with God. Now meditation… is something which they did not explain and in my later years am beginning to understand Prayer without Meditation is not complete.

Lots of things going on through-out the planet… and in my deepest core I feel that there is some spiritual warfare happening that I can not see, yet I can sense something; but finding a strong need to magnify my prayers. For the last 2 months I’ve been feeling a quiet sense of despair, I feel within myself a sense of low drone energy which even these words fail to concisely express the true feeling.

Today I wanted to share one of my favorite Novenas – just in case you are wondering … what the heck is a novena?
A novena (the word comes from Latin: novem, “nine”) is an ancient tradition of devotional praying consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. (I just stick to nine days)

One of my favorite was introduced to me by my parents (I have the Spanish version and was very pleased to find it in English): The Mary, Undoer of Knots Novena Daily Prayers
I love this novena and have personally witnessed the miraculous intervention of the blessed Holy Mother Mary in my life and in those who I have prayed for.

Day 1 – Mary Undoer of Knots Novena

Dearest Holy Mother, Most Holy Mary, you undo the knots that suffocate your children. Extend your merciful hands to me. I entrust to You today this knot [mention your request here] and all the negative consequences that it provokes in my life.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exist in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exists in my life. You know very well how desperate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot.

[Mention your request here]

I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope.
O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains.
Hear my plea.
Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Amen.
